Looking for an immersive experience? Lisa Duncan will help to boost your painting confidence through a series of four two-hour classes offering individualized exercises with demonstrations and hands-on experience. Using still life, photos, and (sometimes) live models as reference, the class covers the fundamentals of oil painting and drawing. Realistic drawing will be covered through the study line quality, composition, the depiction of form through light and shadow, reverse drawing, and more. Painting students will learn how to prepare canvas, block-in techniques, chiaroscuro, grisaille, glazing, color mixing, and more.

Students may choose to study drawing, oil painting, or both. Lisa's ongoing classes welcome individuals at any skill level, allowing each student to begin at their own pace and build upon previous experience through demonstrations, hands-on exercises, and independent work.

Lessons are personalized to suit each student’s progress. You may work alongside classmates on similar projects or explore different lessons tailored to your goals.

For beginners, you can choose to concentrate on learning Oil Painting, Drawing, or Watercolor, just let Lisa know what you'd like to do.

  • Beginning oils: Value theory, Color theory, and begin your first painting with the rose
  • Beginning drawing: Pencil and value theory, Charcoal direct & indirect drawing, pen & ink, still lifes
  • Beginning watercolor: Value & Color theory, Wet-on-wet and dry-on-dry, Frisket & salts, still lifes

  • Beginning artists will learn how to use materials effectively and will be introduced to the fundamentals of value, color, and composition.
  • Intermediate artists will explore diverse techniques while reinforcing and expanding their existing knowledge.
  • Advanced artists will focus on refining their style, pushing creative boundaries, and deepening the skills they’ve already studied.

This class touches on the fundamentals of drawing and oil painting, including the following:

  • capturing form through light and shadow

  • figure drawing

  • mixing color
  • painting from photos

Please don't feel you must have everything. This is just a suggested list.

Materials:

  • Grey canvas pad 9x12
  • Two canvas boards 9x12
  • Grey pallet paper
  • Pallet knife (preferably metal)
  • Oil paints (Titanium White, Ivory Black, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red, Ultramarine Blue)
  • Odorless turpentine/solvent (Gamsol/Turpenoid)
  • Thin oil medium (Linseed/Galkyd/Walnut)
  • Brushes (Brights 4, 6, 8; Small Round; Chisel size 6)
  • Masters Brush Cleaner & Viva Paper Towels

Drawing Materials:

  • Pencils (2H, 2B, 6B) and one white
  • Charcoal (Vine medium, stick or pencil)
  • Papers (9x12 charcoal toned, smooth drawing, toned pastel)
  • Waterproof pens and black India ink
  • Blenders and Erasers (kneaded and solid)
